Poll finds majority of Canadians want Canadian culture protected in the face of U.S. threats

OTTAWA, October 6, 2025 – Canadians overwhelmingly want their on-screen culture and stories protected, according to new public opinion research conducted by Pollara, and commissioned by the Canadian Media Producers Association.
The national survey examined Canadians’ attitudes toward the Canadian media production industry, Canadian culture, and the Online Streaming Act, legislation that requires global streaming services that operate in Canada to invest in Canadian programs.
The research found:
- Eighty-seven per cent (87%) of Canadians support the Online Streaming Act.
- Eighty-eight per cent (88%) believe Canadians should support Canadian TV & film producers the same way citizens are “buying Canadian” elsewhere.
- Eighty-seven per cent (87%) agree that Canadian content and stories should be owned and controlled by Canadian companies, not American companies.
- Eighty-seven per cent (87%) agree that recent threats from the U.S. make it more important than ever to protect Canadian culture.
- Eighty-five per cent (85%) feel the Government of Canada should support Canadian culture and creative industries financially.
- Eighty-eight per cent (88%) believe that the Canadian television and film industry should focus on creating more Canadian content for Canadian and international audiences.
“In the face of continued attacks on Canada’s cultural sovereignty, these findings confirm that Canadians strongly support home-grown media production and want to see our national identity and culture defended on screen,” said Reynolds Mastin, President and CEO, CMPA. “Thanks to the Online Streaming Act, Canada’s domestic media industry is poised to thrive, with millions invested in Canadian stories, tens of thousands of jobs created for Canadians, and lasting support for true cultural sovereignty.”

METHODOLY
Online survey of a randomly selected sample of 1,500 adult (18+) Canadian residents, conducted between September 19-25, 2025. Sample source is the SAGO online panel.
A margin of error cannot be assigned to online surveys. As a guideline, a probability sample of this size carries a margin of error of ±2.5%, 19 times out of 20. The margin of error is larger for sub-segments.
Data has been weighted using the most current age, gender & region Census data, to ensure the sample reflects the actual population of adult Canadians. The full study is available here.
