OTTAWA, April 4, 2025 — The Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) welcomed today’s Liberal Party campaign promise to strengthen Canada’s national broadcaster with increased, stable funding enshrined into law.
“Rising trade tensions with the United States and ongoing attacks on our national sovereignty underscore the need to protect longstanding national institutions, such as Canada’s public broadcaster. A strong, well-funded national public broadcaster that serves all Canadians, invests in our stories, and reinforces national unity is something the entire country should support,” said Reynolds Mastin, President and CEO, CMPA.
As the largest commissioner of original Canadian content, last year CBC invested $400 million in independently-produced content across Canada, including dramas, comedies, documentaries, reality, lifestyle, and kids’ shows.
In its response to today’s announcement, the CMPA also highlighted the importance of ensuring Canada’s public broadcaster meets the needs of all Canadians. “The CBC must continue its efforts to ensure that it truly reflects the varying perspectives of Canadians from all regions, from Gibbons to Gander, Calgary to Charlottetown, Whitehorse to Winnipeg, and beyond,” said Mastin.
