About us

Murmur is home to award-winning filmmaker Christy Garland who has directed documentary features, drama & comedy shorts and documentary profiles.
She is based in Toronto, but has co‐produced her last three feature documentaries with the Nordic countries, particularly with Final Cut for Real in Denmark, who are the producers on WHAT WALAA WANTS, and previously THE BASTARD SINGS THE SWEETEST SONG. She focuses on compelling, intimate, character‐driven stories that unfold over time, using an observational documentary shooting style. 

What Walaa Wants was one of TIFF Canada's Top 10 Canadian feature films of 2018 and after premiering at Berlin Film Festival in 2018, won five international awards including the Hot Docs Special Jury Prize, and the Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award. It was nominated for three Canadian Screen Awards (best doc, editing, cinematography) and the DGC Allan King Award and was shortlisted for the prestigious Glashütte Prize, and the Amnesty Film Award at the Berlinale.

After premiering in 2016 at Hot Docs and DOC NYC, Christy's feature CHEER UP, a co-production with producer Liisa Karpo at napafims oy (Finland) was nominated for a 2018 Canadian Screen Award for Best Documentary Program (TV) It is now being adapted into dramatic series in the UK.
An alumni of Binger Film Lab/Amsterdam & DOK Incubator Prague, she's developing a dramatic feature film and two feature docs.
