My name is Shawn, and I’m currently a board member of the Canadian Media Production Association (formerly the CFTPA). Big shot bio follows (but, really, shouldn’t you be getting back to work now?).
I vaguely remember receiving an Honours B.A. (double major in Mass Communications and English) in 1993 from York University and an LL.B from the University of British Columbia Law School in 1997. I was called to the bar of British Columbia in 1998 and the bar of Saskatchewan in 2002.
I’ve worked exclusively in business and legal affairs in the Canadian film and television industry since my call to the bar: first as Supervisor, Business Affairs at Minds Eye Entertainment, and currently working in Business & Legal Affairs at Vérité Films. My experience with those two companies, as well as my prior experience, allows me to continue to delve into the financing and ongoing administration of Canadian film, television and new media productions from conception through completion, delivery, and exploitation.
Not content to leave well enough alone, I’ve also participated on a number of boards over the years, beginning with the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative, then the Saskatchewan Motion Picture Industry Association, and now the Canadian Media Production Association, with an eye to contributing what and where I can. Throughout, I’ve found I get along best with those seeking thoughtful, solution-oriented approaches to matters of interest in the screen-based media industry, and I think I’ve found a good home at the CMPA.
Aside from the biz, I like spending time with my spouse and three kids. I also play hockey, though my team would likely beg to differ.
