Government Relations & Regulatory Affairs

Overview

The Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA) plays a very active and strategic role in presenting the priorities of the independent production sector to the many levels of Government and related organizations.

On behalf of our members we actively lobby federal and provincial governments on various policy areas including broadcasting, funding programs, copyright, taxation and trade. The CMPA also appears before parliamentary committees to give insight into the development of policy, regulation and legislation.

On the regulatory side, the Association participates actively in all Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) proceedings that are of direct concern to independent producers. This includes appearing regularly before the CRTC to comment in person on broadcast applications, as well as on the Commission's policies and regulations.  When required, the CMPA enlists outside expertise to undertake research to support our regulatory positions.

At the agency level, the CMPA regularly attends consultations for the Canada Media Fund, and the Canada Feature Film Fund to ensure that those support programs effectively respond to the needs of independent producers.
