Fifth Edition of the Pre-Sale Pitch Sessions in Los Angeles

Concept

Up to ten (10) established Canadian independent producers with strong dramatic series proposals (including show reels and, if possible, a pilot) will be invited to pitch one project to senior Development Executives from major US broadcast and cable networks during a three day session held between August 27 - 29, 2013 in Los Angeles.

Background

The Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles, with its partners the Canadian Media Production Association, Telefilm Canada, Canada Media Fund, Alberta Film, Creative BC, Film and Creative Industries Nova Scotia, Manitoba Film & Music, Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation, Ontario Media Development Corporation and Société de développement des entreprises culturelles, have been developing a program to build upon recent successes by Canadian television producers to pre-sell Canadian dramatic series projects to US television and cable networks in Los Angeles.  Although co-ventures (productions that share copyright and producer control with American producers) are quite common, pre-sales of Canadian-content productions which are wholly-owned by Canadian producers continue to enter the Los Angeles market.   To nurture this development, the Consulate and its partners have supported this initiative since 2009.

Financial Participation

Each selected producer will be provided $1,000 CAD from its provincial funding agency to help offset participation expenses. Producers will be responsible for any additional funds required to cover hotel, food and car rental (estimated at approx. $1,400 excluding airfare). Please note that producers will be responsible for their own travel arrangements.

Application Process

Applications must include:

  1. A cover letter advising of interest in participating in the process;
  2. A corporate bio and/or a producer’s bio (one page maximum);
  3. A showrunner bio (one page maximum);
  4. A one sheet concept for the proposed project to be pitched;
  5. A written statement of the rationale for appropriateness of the project to the US marketplace (one page maximum); and,
  6. Link(s) (FTPs, YouTube or similar sites) to trailer and/or pilot (if available).

Applications may only be submitted through the online application portal.

Selection Committee

A Selection Committee will choose up to 10 Canadian producers whose dramatic series projects have the strongest potential for pre‐sale and are most ready to present and move forward, if greenlit.

Producers selected for meetings by the Development Executives will be notified between Monday, August 12 and Monday, August 19.

Selection Criteria

Applications will be assessed using the following criteria:

  1. Demonstrated track record of the key creative team, in particular the producer and the showrunner. Projects with attached showrunners will receive preferential consideration as selected producers should be accompanied by their showrunner during the pitch session in L.A.;
  2. Originality and quality of the creative material; and,
  3. Commercial viability of the proposed project and its demonstrated appropriateness for the US marketplace.
